How can I tell you what it was like to be young; to dream big dreams? And to believe when Lucius looked you in the eye you could do anything. In his presence, by the light of Metriona, we were better than ourselves. - Gaius Arterius on Lucius
Lucius Cornelius Scipio Lysane (24 July 1402 – 17 December 1434), generally known as Lucius Magnus or Lucius the Great and also colloquially as the Liberator, was a Seresian military, political leader, and revolutionary who led the overthrow of the Ashkali Empire and is the progenitor of the the states of Wellestria, Cedronia, Sertoria, Ordovia, and Lucene.
Lucius was born into a wealthy, aristocratic Criollo family and, as was common for the heirs of upper-class families in his day, was sent to be educated abroad at a young age, arriving in Ashkal at the age of 13. While in Ashkal, he was taught underneath famed philosopher and educator and later revolutionary, Isidor Etura. After his father's assassination in 1421, he succeeded his father as the heir to the house and with it, his father's political connections. Taking advantage of the disorder prompted by the Ashkali Civil War, Lucius began his campaign for independence in 1421 at the age of 19. Despite a number of hindrances, including the arrival of an unprecedentedly large Ashkali expeditionary force, the revolutionaries eventually prevailed, culminating in the patriot victory at the Battle of Arex in 1419, which effectively made his home region of Sertoria an independent country.
Following this triumph over the Ashkali government, Lucius participated in the foundation of the first union of independent nations in Patria, the Seresian Republic. Through further military campaigns, he ousted Ashkali rulers from the entirety of the continent save for the eastern region of Kashque. He was Lord Chancellor of the Seresian Republic (present-day Wellestria, Cedronia, Sertoria, Ordovia and Lucene) from 1419 till his death in 1434 however he left most of the administrative tasks to his second-in-command, Gaius Arterius. Lucius aimed at a strong and united Seresian nation able to cope not only with the threats emanating from Ashkal but as well their ancient rival of Tovakizar. At the peak of his power, Lucius ruled over a vast territory from the Wildlands border to the Occiden Sea. Lucius died in Lucene in 1434, without executing a series of planned campaigns that would have begun with an invasion of Tovakizar. In the years following his death, a series of civil wars, known as the Wars of the Successors tore his empire apart, resulting in the establishment of several states ruled by the Lucius's surviving generals and heirs.
Lucius's legacy includes the spreading of Seresian culture and peoples throughout the continent and founded some dozen cities that bore his name, most notably Lucene in Wellestria. Lucius's settlement of Seresian colonists and the resulting spread of Seresian culture in the east resulted in a new Seresian civilization. Lysane is viewed as a national icon in much of modern Seres and is considered a great hero.
