Azar-Akhir, commonly known as Azar the Lightbringer also known as Azar Fireborn (500—467), is the founder and first ruler of the Celestial Empire (in the present-day state of Tovakizar in the Celestial hegemony) and the main catalyst for the spread and normalization of the Asharan religion. Azar is known for unifying the Tovak states and defeated the Eastern Horde led by the Dragon Emperor.
Azar-Akhir was found by the warlord and chief, Barbar after the destruction of his village. Barbar found Azar crying in a burning building and took this as an omen of the gods. Azar was raised as a son to the warlord and grew to be a learned and efficient warrior and leader. Azar's adoptive father waged war against the neighboring state of Denkar and lost, forcing himself to send Azar as a hostage in the Denkar court but had escaped eastward to the powerful state of Akwamu, where he was exposed to new ideas of political and military organization. When he returned to Tovakar, some Akwamu accompanied him. One was a priest, Tishtar, who is usually given credit for introducing Azar to the faith of Azar.
More wars followed, both to consolidate and to extend Asante conquests. During Osei Tutu’s reign as Asantehene (king of Asante), the area of Asante approximately tripled, bringing Asante into contact with the coast and the important slave and gun trade and beginning its turbulent 200-year existence as a powerful and warlike nation.
